Putting the Vines to Bed |

Well the 2008 Harvest/Crush is winding down. We just pressed off the last lot of Merlot.
In the vineyard, the leaves have changed colors -- from green, to yellow, to orange and finally to brown. With each new wind, they are finding their way to the ground. The vines are going to bed (dormant) for the winter.
Before their winter rest though, we're giving them a big drink of water and planting a cover crop of barley and peas. The cover crop will prevent erosion, provide nutrients for next year's crop, and give the sheep something to "mow" over the winter. |

Last May, Rich drove to Oregon to pick up a flock of Southdown Babydoll lambs. The name makes them sound like some newfangled designer sheep, but in fact these cuties are a traditional English breed, that almost died out due to the marketplace’s preference for larger cuts of meat.

Lest I spread too much confusion, let me specify that we are not referring to the grapes, most of which are still ripening as I write, but to our bumper tomato crop, the pride of Roblar’s quarter acre organic vegetable garden, over three hundred pounds of gorgeous San Marzano heirloom tomatoes, a Roma type variety, perfect for canning and sauces.
